Search Tips

Here are a few tips to help get the most out of our library search capabilities.

Q:How do I search by a keyword?

A:You can perform a keyword search two ways:

  1. Use the search box located at the top right of each page. Enter your term then press return.
  2. In Research, select the appropriate section (Notes & Reports, ROI Case studies, etc.) to start your search from. All research for the section will be presented in list form. Enter your term in the "by text" search box located on the right hand side, then press the "go" button.

Q:How do I search for an exact phrase?

A: If you enter multiple words, the search engine will return research documents that contain all of those terms in the title or description. If you want to locate documents that contain exactly what your typed (order included), use double quotes around the phrase.

Example: Business Case will return research that include the terms Business AND Case. "Business Case" will return research that has the exact term "Business Case".

Q:How do I perform a Boolean search?

A: Our search engine supports four boolean operators - AND OR NOT () - which are described below:

  • AND - Narrow search and retrieve research containing all of the words it separates. By default, the search engine returns research documents that include all of your search terms. There is no need to include AND between terms, but you are welcome to do so - just use all capital letters.
  • OR - Broaden search and retrieve research containing any of the words it separates. example: "business intelligence" OR BI
  • NOT - Narrow search and retrieve research that does not contain the term following it. example: Microsoft NOT dynamics
  • () - Group words or phrases when combining Boolean phrase and to show the order in which relationships should be considered. example: (Oracle OR SAP) NOT (Portal OR HAHT)

Q:Do you support automatic word stemming?

A: No - we believe that the combination of Boolean Search plus Filter topics provides significantly better search capabilities than other competitors offer. We do support wildcard searches, so a search for knowledge* will return research containing the words knowledge, knowledgestorm, knowledgebase, etc.

Q:How can I further refine my search?

A: In addition to text search, our search engine supports two additional filtering mechanisms - Filter by Section and Filter by Category

  • Filter by Section: Nucleus publishes several types of research - Notes / Reports, ROI Case studies, and ROI Tools are the most common. You can choose to limit your search to specific sections by selecting / deselecting the desired section checkboxes on the search sidebar.
  • Filter by Category: Each Research document has been indexed to help you get the most out of our offerings. Currently, each document is assigned a relevant industry tag as well as research topic tags. These tags appear in list form in the search sidebar, sorted by frequency (the number of documents using that particular term) Clicking on the tag adds that term to your search and displays any relevant information about the tag for your review. The tag list will refresh, showing only active tags in the current result set, again sorted by frequency. You can add additional terms to further customize your search.

Q:I love my search - how do I save it?

A: You can save your custom search two ways - by bookmark and by RSS feed. An RSS feed provides the benefit of updating your RSS feed with new research that meets your search criteria. Additionally, Nucleus Research clients can manage their saved bookmarks when logged in.
Once you are satisfied with your search, you can save it by performing the following steps:

  1. on the search sidebar, click on the bookmark star or RSS icon. The page will refresh, a static link will be generated, and you will be offered the opportunity to save the search to a variety of bookmark / RSS feed services.
  2. click the desired service, or use your browsers built-in functionality. Each browser / platform is different, but here are a few common ones: Control-D saves the current page as a bookmark in Safari, Firefox & Explorer 7 under Windows XP. Clicking on the RSS Feed link / RSS icon in the save search box should also prompt your browser to save the RSS feed.

Q:how do I retrieve / modify my saved searches?

A: When you choose to save a search, a local cookie is generated on your machine as well as a static link. Typically, that link looks like this http://nucleusresearch.com/research/search/bookmark/number/ where /number/ is a custom generated URL for your purpose. If you save the link using your browser or bookmarking service, you can return to that saved search at a later time.

General users can view and edit their saved searches by clicking on the "edit saved searches" link in the search sidebar module. Note that only searches created on this machine will be visible. Logged in Nucleus Research clients can manage their saved searches on any browser.
