ECM Technology Value Matrix finds AI, Machine Learning and Integration Driving the Next Generation of Vendor Solutions for 2019

Nucleus Research highlights content management and collaboration shift from security and privacy priorities to integrated AI and machine learning capabilities

With General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) compliance rollouts largely complete worldwide, Enterprise Content Management (ECM) vendors are shifting from security and privacy priorities toward machine learning and AI for tighter integration, the ECM Value Matrix 2019 shows. Leading vendors are pivoting to integration between independent applications, optical character recognition for more efficient data capture, collaboration tools, and the extension of AI and machine learning (ML) technologies to help organizations derive more value from their data.

ECM Technology Value Matrix Leaders include: Box, Laserfiche, M-Files, Nuxeo and OpenText.

“This year user feedback has been radically different, leading with AI and machine learning, automation, integration, capture, and collaboration. Users stated that although security is still on their radar, they now expect vendors to deliver secure products and are more concerned with innovation as a differentiator,” said Barbara Peck, principal analyst at Nucleus Research.

Nucleus predicts traditional monolithic ECM vendors will continue to fade as buyers look for usability, functionality and innovation – rather than reputation – when selecting content management and collaboration platforms. Some mature vendors will remain, but won’t be expanding their market position, as customers look for offerings that deliver an integrated view of content management spanning the lifecycle of a document from inception to archiving.
