Since its inception, enterprise resource planning (ERP) software has served as a backbone of the enterprise software ecosystem but the technology has only recently become universally available. The business opportunities of becoming any company’s central system of record caused a rush among vendors to maximize market share wherever and whenever possible, leading to scattered product development outside of core competencies. Customers now encounter considerable difficulty when navigating the ERP market and often choose systems based on reputation alone. Vendors have taken notice of these industry-specific service shortages and are beginning to develop specialized solutions where none had existed before.
