Winding down 2013

With our top 10 predictions for 2014 published I thought I might take a moment to look back at our 2013 predictions. My personal favorite prediction was the rise of 3D printers and that made the news throughout the year. I’m confident 3D printers will prove to be the next true disruptive technology and the possibility for their use is vast. We also took a jab at Windows 8 and no surprise, Microsoft addressed many of the complaints with 8.1. Thank you Microsoft. Business intelligence continues to grow in importance, as did integration and edge applications. BYOD might have taken a pause in the news, if only because it quickly fell to the point where it’s expected rather than still a topic of discussion. We called the unemployment numbers and still stand by our assertions that technology is a headwind to employment. HP isn’t dead but when was the last time we heard anything from them? They might be dead and no one has bothered to knock on the door at 3000 Hanover Street and check for a body. That goes for security spending. Although still an issue, security is becoming an underlying infrastructure rather than a CIO issue. Yes, it’s needed, stop ranting and move on. Finally customer experience and social continue to top the news, and the to-do lists for many CIO’s. I think the 2013 predictions were pretty solid. Let’s see how 2014 goes.
