Summer Camp Degrees

Let me go a little off topic for a moment. It’s no surprise value is an increasingly important part of technology decisions, and Nucleus has been experiencing significant growth in business lately. We’ve launched a new Web site and we’ve been expanding both our research and sales teams. Traditionally, we’ve relied on experienced analysts for the team and that will remain our plan for each core area but we’re looking for junior analysts to work within existing market areas and that’s created a flood of resumes from new college graduates. If you’ve ever looked through a stack of resumes you’ve likely developed your own sorting strategy and my assistant is very good at presorting the resumes before I see them. Some of the filters are rational (GPA, college, course load) and some may be slightly irrational (Bureau of Labor Statistics employees are unlikely to get a job with us given their history of revising past data). After a few interviews with underqualified and overconfident candidates, we’ve added a new filter to the list: “Summer Camp Degrees.” The assertion is that if your college major could have been a summer camp activity (music, history, art) it’s likely your resume won’t get past the initial review. Now if we could just automate the process.
