Tech ROI Awards Spotting Early Trends and Best Practices

Over the past 12 years the Technology ROI Awards have recognized the best IT deployments in the industry. They’ve also identified powerful industry trends that have helped companies optimize tech value.

For example, we saw early on how the cloud was delivering exponential returns as many award winners exceeded an ROI of 1,000 percent. Pay back was accelerating too. And where others took a cautious ‘wait-and-see’ approach to the cloud in the early days, at Nucleus Research we knew from the get-go how transformative it was. We had the evidence in hand with indisputable numbers – return on investment.

In fact, ROI is a simple formula that business school students learn in their first semester: (Net Return – Investment Cost)/Investment Cost x 100. And as new technologies emerge, clever new metrics gain favor and priorities shift, ROI is the constant. It’s the smoking gun that proves beyond a doubt if technology is delivering value.

In addition to cloud computing, the Tech ROI Awards was early to spot the mobile trend, as well as the rise of analytics and even the resurgence of CRM. We are now seeing early signs that verticalization is emerging as a differentiator, where industry-specific features are enhancing ROI for products.

But the biggest story around this year’s Tech ROI Awards is the high numbers the winners are posting. With an average ROI surpassing 1,500 percent for the class of 2015, this is the strongest showing yet for the awards. In the past, we’ve typically seen one or two explosive implementations lead the pack, but this year more than half exceed 1,500 percent ROI.

In fact, we see a general trend upward for ROI over the 12 years of the award program. This speaks to both a sharper focus by organizations to maximize return for their tech investments and an increasing emphasis by vendors to provide solutions that deliver value. As this year’s winners and the vendors supporting them prove, ROI is a powerful business differentiator.
